7 Amazing Backstage Stories From Wrestling Announcers
7. Gorilla Monsoon Routinely Had Wads Of Cash Behind Announce Desk
Gorilla Monsoon first broke into the pro wrestling business in the late-1950's. It's logical that the industry was extremely different back then, but the legendary announcer and former wrestler didn't trust a lot of people. For that very reason, it wasn't uncommon for him to come armed to shows with a ton of money. Instead of keeping the cash in a bank account, or even in a safe, Monsoon would apparently carry it around with him. It's insane to imagine that Gorilla had as much as $25,000 at one time whilst he was broadcasting on some huge events. For example, at the very first Survivor Series event in 1987, the commentator had a whole load of dollar bills in attendance with him. The reasons for this were never really explained, although Bobby Heenan did occasionally allude to the fact when working alongside the man. Today, WWE announcers are surrounded by laptop computers, water and maybe even snacks handed out by sponsors. Imagine a scenario whereby Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and JBL were stashing their own personal fortune underneath the desk? It's unfathomable, but that's what Gorilla Monsoon did, because he liked to keep his money close to him.
