7 Classic Wrestling Storylines WWE Should Recycle
4. Shawn Michaels Vs. Razor Ramon – Who’s The Real Champion?
With WWE focused on breaking new ground in the women's division, one match type that has yet to be explored is a ladder match. Despite the women's rosters on both Raw and SmackDown being thin, deeper storytelling is the best way to keep the division interesting.
In 1993, Shawn Michaels was suspended for using steroids during a time when the company was facing an unseemly trial for steroid distribution - a charge he denies to this day. On screen, he was ordered to give up the Intercontinental title (ostensibly for defending it too few times), but he refused to surrender the belt.
Razor Ramon was declared the new champion, but Michaels returned with his title, claiming to be the "real" champion. The program culminated in the influential ladder match at Wrestlemania X.
The rivalry was great because it was about who was the better performer, so the motivation was to be champion, which added prestige to the title. While WWE has worked very hard to label Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks as the greatest women's rivalry, the reality is that the Bayley vs. Sasha rivalry in NXT was the best in recent years, especially with Banks in the heel role. Instead of hot-shotting the women's title back and forth as has been the custom of late, having two women do something that hasn't been done in WWE would add to the lure of the Raw Women's Championship.
WWE could play off of Banks' real-life injury issues by having her take the women's title yet again from Charlotte, then be forced to drop it due to a kayfabe injury. After Bayley wins it, Banks, now a defiant heel, could refuse to return the belt, leading to a ladder match to determine the "real" champion.
