There’s an age-old tradition of making wrestlers look weak before they win big matches so that their victory feels like a surprise. It is moronic, but there you go.

Money In The Bank contract holders go on losing streaks before cashing in; Wyatt was the dark horse of Elimination Chamber 2017; Jinder Mahal lost nearly every match he had before his World Title victory. It adds to the shock value when they win, but it also emotionally charges the wrestler going into the their next feud. They feel compelled to prove their victory wasn't a fluke, but one of skill.

2017 was a terrible year for Ziggler. He became the sacrificial lamb for Shinsuke Nakamura and Bobby Roode, as he tried to prove that he is the veteran scalp of SmackDown Live. Ziggler recently won the US Title which did come as a surprise to most of us, but he vacated it - and walked out claiming that the WWE fans were not worthy of him.

Few people believe that Dolph has left WWE, but with his US Championship victory, it feels like his time of being jobber to the stars is over. And with one big win, another usually follows.

A surprise return at the Rumble is imminent, and a win would add a twist that fans are definitely not expecting.
