Best to get the bad news out of the way early; NXT is almost revisiting the worst iteration of the legendary match. The last WarGames, at WCW Fall Brawl 1998, was a disaster of nonsensical rules and a stupid lack of pin attempts - and, with the Warrior's cheesy appearance, the match quality literally went up in smoke. It was the The Match Beyond Common Sense, more than it was the Match Beyond.

Roderick Strong & The Authors of Pain Vs. SAnitY Vs. The Undisputed Era follows the same template, but there's no chance of it following the same structure. Triple H has a lob-on for WarGames almost as raging as his lob-on for the spotlight, so this should be good - and, crucially, authentic. WWE stressed in the press release the format of the original WarGames as "a battle between teams that was fought in two rings enclosed by a steel cage." This isn't going to be a glorified triple threat tag team Hell In A Cell match; WWE, after years of (Vince McMahon) refusal, is finally doing WarGames, and doing it right. If the NXT road agents can mask the inexperience of Akam and Rezar well enough to situate them in a Match of the Year contender at TakeOver: Orlando, imagine how good, how dramatic, NXT WarGames will be. This is something we never thought possible, and we should be both grateful and stupidly, stupidly excited.

There probably won't be blood, given the confines under which the company now operates, but there won't be the Shockmaster, either.

Every cloud.
