7 Most Surprising WWE PPV Main Eventers Ever
3. The Nexus - SummerSlam 2010
As with R-Truth a year later, WWE deserve credit for trying something different at SummerSlam 2010. Yes, there were established WWE headliners in there in the form of Edge, John Cena, Chris Jericho and, erm, Bret Hart, but the opposing team was full of rookies freshly called up from developmental.
The Nexus angle was hot sh*t at the time, with Wade Barrett and co. running riot on Raw and really getting over as a force to be reckoned with. Still, as good as the angle was to that point, it was nonetheless surprising to see them headlining one of the biggest pay-per-views of the year.
The match itself was good and well worked, even if some of the combatants looked none-too-ready for the big time, with the returning Daniel Bryan (wrestling for team WWE), Justin Gabriel and Barrett standing out as ones to watch. Logic would dictate that Team Nexus would triumph over Team WWE, but it was not to be.
Instead, good ol' Super Cena never gave up and fought back against the odds, vanquishing Barrett and Gabriel despite taking a DDT on the floor. That was pretty much it for the Nexus as a force to be reckoned with, and only Barrett headlined pay-per-views from that point on.
