7 Possible Consequences If WWE Crown Jewel Goes Ahead
2. A Fox Rethink
Late October's Future Investment Initiative - drolly nicknamed the 'Davos of the Desert' - has been devised by Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman in a bid to explore how the kingdom can wean itself off its dependence on dwindling oil revenue. However, uneasiness over the possible role of the Saudi Arabian government in Khashoggi's disappearance has resulted in a host of major media companies withdrawing from the Riyadh conference.
Prominent names pulling out of the junket include Viacom, The New York Times, and The Economist. At the time of writing, the only American media company still scheduled for the conference are Fox Business News, who are said to be "monitoring the situation."
If Fox decide to withdraw - and with all their professional colleagues having already done so, they'd be wise to follow suit - it could raise some rather awkward questions over the company's television deal with WWE. After all, it'll be difficult to take a moral high ground whilst simultaneously splurging a billion dollars on a company in bed with the Vision 2030 project.
Historically, Fox haven't been too concerned about controversial content on their network, but that could very well be the sticking point; how can Fox promote their own agenda - generally an unabashedly nationalist one - whilst on the other hand supporting a company in cohorts with a foreign government oppressing those basic American liberties? If ratings continue to slide - and a fan boycott would see to it that they will - the excuse to wield the axe could come as a relief.
