7 Reasons WWE Should Build Around Kevin Owens

7. Cena Needs A Successor

We’ll start things off by establishing why the company needs to “build” around anyone at all. WWE has had their most successful years when they’ve found someone to be their absolute top star, and have the majority of main event programs built around them. The lineage is fairly straight forward: Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, The Rock and John Cena.

The company desperately tried to make Roman Reigns the next “guy”, but fans loudly rejected that plan. They are in a weird state right now where Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Reigns (still) are vying for the coveted role on their respective rosters, but none of them have yet connected in a meaningful way. With Cena taking on a part-time role this year, someone should be able to ascend to the top in his absence, but it’s not happening.

While all three Shield alumni are certainly talented in their own ways, none of them has shown that they can be the absolute top star in the way that WWE desperately needs. If Vince opens up his mind a bit more, he may see that the best choice he has available is already holding the Universal Championship.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
