7 Rules WWE Should Bring Back
4. The Tag Rope
Some superstars still hold the tag rope from time to time, but over the years, it has been rendered purposeless. Countless hot tag sequences see fresh partners leaning halfway over the top rope, and some wrestlers pace along the apron from one ring post to the next and back again without the ref once demanding they stay in their corner.
The use of the tag rope may seem trivial, but it can serve to add dramatic elements to team matches.
By having to hold onto the rope, the desperate superstar is even more limited when it comes to reaching for the tag. Competitors may only have five seconds to return to their corners when attacking opponents now, but they used to also have the five count to go back to the tag rope regardless of their involvement. While it may seem like it prevents some wrestlers from showing how antsy they are to come in and save the match, it always reminds fans that there is little the superstars can do besides cheer and wait without facing disqualification.
In addition, reinforcing the use of the tag rope creates more breaks for overlooked illegal tags, and it can sustain suspense by stopping the faces from being able to switch out. The tag rope itself can also be manipulated for heelish or comedic purposes, as seen on multiple occasions with Eddie Guerrero.
