7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 1989

1. Hogan Eliminating Savage Was A Huge Shock

http://youtu.be/6fRCzuQH1mg Randy Savage was the WWE Champion going into the 1989 Royal Rumble and he was one of the most popular wrestlers in WWE too. Hulk Hogan was portrayed as best friend, so when it came time to have the Rumble match it was the perfect time to do a big angle between them. Following Hogan's elimination of The Warlord that was previously mentioned, Hogan went over to the other side of the ring where Savage was battling with Bad News Brown by the ropes. With both men leaning forward, Hogan dumped Brown over the top to the floor. He didn't actually touch Savage, but the momentum sent Savage out too. Immediately after the elimination, Savage went back into the ring and got right in Hogan's face. He actually shoved him. It should be pointed out too that the crowd was going wild for all of this. It was crazy. Savage put his finger in Hogan's face and Savage did it to him too. Savage's manager Miss Elizabeth showed up to try to separate the two superstars. They ended up shaking hands and hugging it although you just knew all wasn't well with them. Savage left the ring while Hogan continued in the match. Hogan was eliminated before the #24 entrant in the match and he was credited with 10 eliminations. It was the heel duo of Akeem and Big Bossman, who were known as the Twin Towers. They feuded with Hogan just because Vince McMahon loved to feed the big guys to Hogan for him to beat, so that's why they were the ones to send him out. Both Hogan and Savage did a great job during the match. Less than a month later, they did their split at the Main Event and that set up Savage defending the WWE Title against Hogan at WrestleMania 5. Thanks to this angle, we also learned an important lesson about the Royal Rumble: it truly is every man for himself.
