As a child, AJ Lee felt "off". At the same time, she regularly experienced rushes of extreme bravery or toughness when she arguably should have been scared. In her own words, she was the small girl at school who was prone to throwing punches or saying what was on her mind if she was provoked.

It wasn't until she was diagnosed as bi-polar aged 19 or 20 that things began to make sense for AJ. Suddenly, she realised there'd been a reason for her behaviour as a kid, and her parents also finally had some explanation for their daughter's personality. At that point, her life changed.

Bi-polar didn't become a crutch, but it did become something AJ had to manage.

Again, the science behind the disorder is particularly engaging for newcomers. Dr. Berlin's description of how the medical world tries to treat bi-polar (and how that differs from Lee's own day-to-day management) highlights the danger of seeking only one opinion, even from a professional.
