7 Things We Learned From The Evolution Of CM Punk - The Ground Up

6. AJ Lee Will Not Be Watching

As noted by Punk early in The Ground Up, AJ Lee isn't a fan of mixed martial arts. In fact, he struggled with how to break the news of his pending career in professional fighting to her. That can't be easy for any couple, let alone a newly married pair.

Later in the documentary, Lee confirms that she won't be watching him fight. "I'll just close my eyes the whole time" is Lee's comment, after Punk notes that she offered her support, but didn't want to watch him in action. Added AJ, "I just don't enjoy seeing your face with bruises on it."

The irony in that statement is that bruises — and more serious injuries — are a common occurrence in the pair's previous pro wrestling careers (it should be noted that when this scene was filmed, Lee was still with the WWE). That said, injuries in wrestling generally occur by accident, as workers try to protect one another. In a live fight, injuries are the inevitable outcome of a planned attack, and simply part of the game.

That's often not something easily accepted by friends and loved ones of fighters starting out, especially if they've never been around the sport before.
