7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 2004

6. Brock Lesnar Needed A Better WWE Title Feud

Hardcore Holly as the number one contender to the WWE Title? Really? It's one of those things that happened that you look back on and shake your head wondering why. There was some history there because Lesnar accidentally dropped Holly on his neck during a match and it cost him about a year of his career, but that didn't mean that Holly was suddenly a WWE Title contender. Fans respected the guy as a tough wrestler. However, he was only a midcarder at best and it was going to be tough for him to be anything more than that to the average fan. Their match sucked. They only went about 7 minutes, which is very short for a WWE Title match on a major PPV although made sense since Holly shouldn't be booked strong to compete with Lesnar. Most of the match saw Lesnar using a bearhug on him until Holly made a brief comeback, but it didn't go anywhere because Lesnar hit the F5 to retain easily. It would have been fine as a TV feud with a built up match on Smackdown. Putting it on the Royal Rumble card seemed to be a bit of a waste. It was also done because they didn't have enough top babyface contenders on the Smackdown brand.
