7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 2004

7. The Big Push For Eddie Guerrero Was A Smart Move

Eddie Guerrero was a star on the rise on the Smackdown brand in the second half of 2003. He was also a Tag Team Champion with nephew Chavo Guerrero Jr, who was only a few years younger than him. After they lost the tag title, Chavo attacked Eddie to set up their feud with Chavo in the heel role while Eddie became one of the most well liked stars in WWE. Their match at the 2004 Royal Rumble was simple. It was about putting Eddie over Chavo. He really didn't like that his nephew turned his back on him, but he had to do what he had to do. Eddie won the match rather easily in only 8 minutes. It would have been better if they had more time. However, making it a short match made Eddie look better because if he was pushed to 15-20 minutes then it would have made him look weak. Eddie won clean with the Frog Splash. The fans were chanting "Eddie! Eddie!" after it was over. They were behind him 100%. Eddie went on to attack Chavo Jr. with a barrage of fists and also attacked his brother Chavo Sr. by using his own tie to tie him to the ropes. The post match beating led to Chavo Jr. bleeding as well. As we found out later, WWE really loved having blood on this show. That was done to make Eddie look more intense and like a legitimate top guy. It was the start of Eddie's main event push. One month later he beat Brock Lesnar to win the WWE Title for the first time.
