7 Ups & 2 Downs For Last Night's NXT (May 20)

4. My God, I Hate Them

Two things here. 1) Santana Garrett is way better than I'd previously realised and, 2) Jonny Gargono going from winning the longest, most bitter feud in NXT history, to just simply being Candice LeRae's dork boyfriend/world's whitest hypeman is about a million times more entertaining than it's got any right to be.

As ever, the pair insist that they're the best man and woman in the entire company, and demonstrably can't back that up in the ring. They go after Mia Yim for getting another big opportunity she didn't deserve, and said opportunity is a meaningless TV match against a woman who barely features on the show. It's a living pastiche of how WWE books their serious heels, and each week I hate it so much that I love it a little more.

Between the criticism for this and the Blackheart segment that preceded it, I do wonder if I've maybe gone slightly deranged in isolation, but while riding a tank veers firmly into the so-bad-it's-good territory, I actually think the LaRae Gargano stuff is really, really smart. When was the last time you were this desperate to see some heels get their comeuppance? When was the last time WWE wrote a heel who wasn't so good you secretly cheered them or, worse, just incredibly boring.

I'm energised by how much I dislike these two, not exhausted by it. Also, as mentioned, Santana Garrett is way better than I'd previously realised.
