7 Ups & 2 Downs From AEW Dynamite (11 May)

1. Bret vs. Shawn

Adam Cole vs. Dax Harwood was a fabulous television match that utilised necessary restraint in how it told its story of conflicting pro wrestling ideologies.

This was ostensibly Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart. Opposing sides of one of the most fraught rivalries in pro wrestling history inspire these two men, which played into the story. Dax has never been shy of sharing his admiration for Hart and straight-up dedicated his tournament performances to the family on last week's Rampage. The Hitman's influence is evident in his tight, detail-oriented approach to the sport, too. Cole, meanwhile, worked directly beneath Michaels at the WWE Performance Center, though his work was already rife with the Heartbreak Kid's signature dramatics, for better or worse.

Two less skilled workers would have overcooked the story and spoon-fed the audience, producing something overwrought with melodrama. Not these guys. Cole was showy, but only to try and get inside Dax's head. Harwood answered, primarily, but out-wrestling Cole, borrowing a few moves from Bret's playbook (the chest-first corner bump, for one) in the process.

Cole eventually putting Dax away via Sharpshooter was a perfect, cruel finish after the FTR man had already attempted the hold to a giant pop. Heartbreaking in all the right ways, it painted Adam as the tournament's alpha villain.
