7 Ups & 2 Downs From AEW Dynamite (19 Jan)
2. Sting Dived Off The Stage Again, Lads
Match for match, Sting remains the most fun wrestler on the planet. Nought but pure, transcendent joy radiates from his work, no matter the opponent, and while last night's bout with The Acclaimed didn't perhaps soar like the FTR and Men of the Year clashes did, it was still one hell of a ride to close the show.
Max Caster taking aim at WWE's boneheaded "gory self-mutilation" comment in his pre-match rap was followed by him and Anthony Bowens taking Darby Allin out with a chair around the neck, heightening the drama. Left to fight alone, Sting was his usual age-defying self, no-selling a rolling elbow from Bowens while Caster was stuck in a Scorpio Deathlock, enduring just long enough for Darby to come back into it with a spectacular dive over the crowd.
A series of memorable spots closed this thing out, including a double Coffin Drop to the outside. At 62 years old, Sting dived off the stage to take Caster out. The match was won soon after.
Working his first TBS match in over 21 years, Sting was at the heart of what made this so enjoyable. No, it wasn't some kind of ***** outing, but it didn't need to be. You had a blast watching a crazy old man doing things crazy old men shouldn't be able to do. You suspended your disbelief for it.
That's the joy.
