7 Ups & 2 Downs From AEW Dynamite (February 14 - Results & Review)
3. ...The Post-Match Is Even Better
The Young Bucks doing trad pro wrestling is both surreal and funny. Of course they're great at it.
Tony Schiavone conducted a post-match interview with them. Matthew pointed out that he has heard Schiavone clutching his pearls over their antics at the commentary table. He's upset about it, but not as much as his hothead brother, who shoulder barged Tony to the canvas.
(One small complaint: AEW has done this once too often. This should be something more awful and beyond the pale than even attacking Sting and his family. Wardlow, using the exact same physical movement it should be added, did this to Schiavone just a few months ago.)
Seemingly apologetic, the Bucks motioned to lift Schiavone off the canvas. In a blinding and super-creative bit of physical storytelling, they seamlessly threatened to strike Schiavone with the EVP Trigger. The set-up looks identical. It is this level of thought that separates the Bucks from virtually everybody else - the level of thought that indicates they are back, dialled-in, thinking about and feeling their work all over again.
Sadly, this didn't quite generate the intended "F*ck off, you can't do that" reaction. Darby Allin made the save, and eventually made the match official - after berating the Bucks for what they did last week and for overlooking him back in 2019 in favour of Brandon Cutler. Darby has a mixed record of using real-life history in his promos, and can veer into dreaded worked-shoot territory, but his alluding to Cody Rhodes here was brilliant, since you're not meant to hear that name anymore, much less in such glowing terms. Darby thanked God that AEW used to have one EVP who knew what he was doing, and his name isn't Kenny Omega.
This storyline is superb and is highlighting the best AEW PPV build in well over a year.
