Last year's Grand Slam was a special occasion. The standing ovation that received the mere reality that the Kenny Omega Vs. Bryan Danielson dream match was happening was an immortal pro wrestling moment.

Once the haze ascended, a less-than-ideal reality crept back in: AEW had lit up the first Grand Slam with a blue hue which, combined with the way in which it was filmed, meant it looked as much like an episode of WWE SmackDown as an epic stadium show.

AEW corrected that strange own goal last night; Arthur Ashe was unmistakably gorgeous, and the director took every opportunity to show off the grand, worked scope of the setting with gratuitous wide shots.
