7 Ups & 2 Downs From AEW Dynamite (July 12 - Review)

Hook Jack Perry
AEW

The good news is that, as result of the latest cartoonish battle scene between the two, Hook and Jack Perry's programme has a central theme and its "escaping in cars".

The former 'Jungle Boy' was speaking to Alex Marvez from the car park again, incensed that his former Tag Team partner wouldn't just leave him alone. Then, the 'Cold-Hearted Handsome Devil' struck, but the fake feeling way the attack played out was reminder that this is sub-standard comedy at best and badly-blocked wrestling shtick at worst. Hook had the time and space to pulverise him in the back of that motor, but this is weekly episodic television so it can't be that simple, stupid. Perry was no great shakes at the big bad heel stuff following his Forbidden Door turn, but the pivot between serious and silly has been sharper than the objects Jon Moxley uses on his own dome.

And it's less-than-ideal away from that bargaining anyway. We are being asked to believe that the two are racing up and down the roads together, turning up at work on a Wednesday, clashing, and starting the loop all over again. Yes this makes Hook a little bit like the big bad from It Follows, but it yet again feels too lightweight for two men whose development relies on having something proper to sink their teeth into.
