If Ted Dibiase tried to cynically game his way to the title as if he were a crook at an Atlantic City table, Randy Savage was tasked with somehow beating the house. With grit, greatness and amazing gear, he pulled off what appeared impossible.

The Macho Man had to take the hard road - victories over Butch Reed, Greg Valentine and One Man Gang were hurdles of different shape, size and situation - before squeaking by the Million Dollar Man with help from 'The Hulkster', but an undercurrent of romance had to underpin the entire ordeal.

Savage's relationship with Elizabeth had changed since he'd seen the light. Her emotional investment and influence finally carried the weight of hope rather than paranoia. Sadly for Savage, it wasn't built to last.
