7 Ups & 9 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Jun 11)
2. The Miz Gets Meta
There was something wonderfully meta about The Miz's SmackDown spiel, which began with 'The A-Lister' holding up a cue card then saying: "I am being told that I must follow the script tonight."
Shane McMahon had apparently curated his own introduction for him. This led to Miz going "off-script" as he ran through the 49-year-old's preface, referring to him as both "the breast in the world" and "the pest of the world," because, y'know, sick burns.
The heels arrived soon after, but what does it say about WWE creative that Miz began with a jab at reading from a script before uttering two of the worst insults this company has come up with all year? The breast/pest gags were schoolyard stuff, and the kind of jokes only a child could possibly find funny, yet this was WWE's chosen method of subversion.
That's why this Down is second from the top. Miz's garbage spiel inadvertently spoke volumes about the current situation in this promo, particularly if this was supposed to be some kind of jab at people who (rightly) bemoan scripted promos.
