7 Ups And 5 Downs From Last Night's WWE Raw (Jan 30)
3. A Feud Without Heat
The Cruisers' struggles weren't restricted to Nese vs. Ali last night. The Royal Rumble saw Neville unseat Rich Swann as Cruiserweight Champion in a match that started slow but escalated towards the end. It was a logical move, as Neville is comfortably the hottest thing in the division at the moment, and last night was supposed to be his coronation.
Neville hit the ring to cut a typically strong promo, stating that he'd officially been crowned King of the Cruiserweights, and that he had proved all the peasants wrong. This drew Swann out from backstage, and the former champion was unsuccessful in his attempts at talking Neville down from his ledge. Neville ordered he bow, Swann refused, and Swann overcame the seething champion in the ensuing brawl.
Another acceptable segment, yet one entirely devoid of heat. Continuing with Neville vs. Swann isn't necessarily a bad idea, but absolutely nobody is in the arena was paying attention. Tumbleweed was practically blowing across the ring as these two talked, and the worst part is that it's not even their fault. Swann is inherently likeable, and Neville has been fantastic since returning as a heel, but the level of investment just isn't there, and it's all down to WWE's mishandling of the Cruiserweight division as a whole.
