7 Wrestlers You Didn't Know Did MMA

7. Santino Marella

Santino Marella Mma Anyone who watches Santino Marella today without prior knowledge of his early career would never have thought that he'd compete in mixed martial arts. Yet early on in his career, Santino made an unsuccessful venture into MMA, coming up on the losing end of his lone bout, being knocked out in just 26 seconds by Takashi Ishino. Marella, whose real name is Anthony Carelli, inexplicably fought under the name Joe Basko during the 2004 bout, which was largely forgotten, until a photograph of the fight showing Marella's familiar tattoos surfaced. Marella claims to have a 6-1 MMA record, though no evidence of his other bouts has become publicly available. In 2005, Marella was signed by the WWE, and debuted in Ohio Valley Wrestling under a Russian shootfighter gimmick, named Boris Alexiev, which was later dropped in favor of his current comedy gimmick. Marella's gimmick may be all jokes, but he may get the last laugh, as last year he opened a wildly successful pro wrestling and MMA gym, BattleArts.
