8 Awesome WCW Ideas That Didn't Last
6. Ted DiBiase Financing The NWO
The excited fervour of Scott Hall dumping Steve Doll and The Mauler out of a Nitro ring in May 1995 gave way to complete bedlam just under two months later, when Hulk Hogan revealed himself as the interlopers' third man.
Cool though the whole 'New World Order' concept was, it was not fully baked. What exactly was their objective, for example? And what was in it for them? Money? Power?
At least one of those questions was answered by the reveal of former WWE tycoon Ted 'Million Dollar Man' DiBiase as the cell's benefactor. With the finances sorted, the nWo were at liberty to recruit defectors from within, as part of their as yet hazy goal to take over WCW.
It was somewhat ambiguous whether this actually made sense. As the intricacies of the story itself was concerned, DiBiase's millions helped explain how three otherwise jobless megastars could afford to mount an ideological offensive without going hungry, brother. On the other hand, intrigue in the nWo persisted so long as fans bought that this was a legitimate invading force, and being backed by the obviously fake millions of 'The Million Dollar Man' exposed the work.
Having insider Eric Bischoff take the role made that much more sense in maintaining the illusion. It also rendered 'Trillionaire Ted' entirely irrelevant.
