Seth Rollins' return from a devastating knee injury came at the conclusion of a stunt-filled brawl between Roman Reigns and AJ Styles. The match itself was a good one to end the 2016 Extreme Rules pay-per-view on a high, so the return felt like an added treat to conclude the night. Seth had been out of action since the previous November after tearing several ligaments in his knee. Bar an appearance at the 2015 Slammy Awards, Rollins was off television for the entire time.

The injury to Seth couldn't have come at a worse time, as he was in the midst of his first reign as WWE Champion.

As a result of the damage, he was forced to miss both the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 32 events, something that properly hurt Seth as shown in a future WWE 24 episode. No-one expected to see Seth return in the grand nature that he did, ambushing former Shield brother Roman Reigns after he had successfully defended the World title.

Some would say he returned with authority (pun certainly intended).
