8 Controversial WWE Finishes That Actually Worked

1. I'm Seeing Double - Four Hebners!

Hulk Hogan never lost a World Title cleanly, did he? It usually took the 82nd Airborne to get Hogan's shoulders on the mat and the title off his waist. Yes, the Hulkster was always 'protected', usually to an annoying degree. The way he lost the WWF Title at The Main Event in 1988, however, was rather brilliant. Hogan was defending against Andre the Giant in a rematch from WrestleMania III. There would be no repeat of the bodyslam and the big leg, as evil referee Earl Hebner counted the pin for Andre, despite the fact that Hogan's shoulders were blatantly off the mat. It transpired that Andre's manager, Ted Dibiase, had bribed Hebner to screw Hogan out of the title. Earl's identical twin Dave was supposed to be the referee, but he had locked in a closet backstage. It was a great finish and helped excuse Hogan's upcoming absence (he was filming cinematic classic No Holds Barred) while also setting up a tournament for the vacant championship at WrestleMania IV.
