8 Disturbing WWE Raw Moments You Totally Don't Remember

6. The Most Uncomfortable Handicap Match In History (8 January 1999)

The Eighth Wonder Of The World, Chyna, was in the middle of a fairly significant push in late 1998 and early 1999, upsetting Vince McMahon in his staged 'Corporate Rumble' on RAW. After she successfully beat McMahon (by accident and after some interference, admittedly) in an arm wrestling contest, the boss had had enough: he placed her into a handicap match with his Stooges, Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco.

I'd ask you to note, just in passing, that Patterson and Brisco weren't always the hapless Bad Acting Twins backstage, Vince McMahon's whipping boys and gophers. Both men had a legitimate pedigree as mid-level wrestling legends - Patterson, in particular, was the WWF's first ever Intercontinental Champion, and the man whose legacy was invoked whenever the company wanted to remind people that the title was important.

The handicap match is, of course, bloody dreadful - but it's not supposed to be a technical or dramatic masterclass. The two middle-aged men proceed to be fairly dreadfully sexist towards Chyna, which was to be expected. Fans also expected the babyface to be humiliated and knocked about before scoring a defiant win over the two horrible old geezers.

What wasn't expected was exactly how the heels chose to acquire that 'kill 'em, Chyna' heat, throwing powder into her eyes and then, while she was blinded and swinging wildly for the fences, deciding to sexually molest her: grabbing her rear end and then, unbelievably, her chest. Remember that this was live, on Monday Night RAW, on a show attended and watched by families and children. Forget 'heel heat', forget the TV rating certificate: this storyline showcased blatant violation of a woman by two chortling men, playing out in the middle of a WWF ring. Someone backstage needed a bit of a kicking.
