8 Gimmicks From The Past That Wouldn't Work In Today's WWE

1. The Day Job

After the cartoon era of the 1980s, it seemed the WWF was in a state of flux in the 1990s. Gone were the overblown physiques of yesterday's steroidal superheroes and in their place were an army of occupational warriors. It was a stark contrast to a decade prior and far from a welcome change.

While the late '80s and early '90s had their fair share of job related gimmicks - including Mounties, clowns and repo men - the WWF really went into overdrive in the mid '90s. From garbage men, teachers, and dentists to plumbers, race car drivers, and ice hockey players, it seemed like the only way to get a job in the WWF was to portray someone that already had one.

Worst of all, the gimmicks themselves were often the kiss of death and saw some genuine talents slip by the wayside as a result. Shane Douglas almost ruined his career by becoming the Dean Douglas character, while Glenn Jacobs run as Isaac Yankem was a criminal waste of a man his size.

Nevertheless, some job gimmicks did get over. The Big Bossman even had two runs in WWE ten years apart, the latter of which took place at the height of the Attitude Era. However, it's unlikely a day-job gimmick would get over today... unless you're Brock Lesnar and your day job is MMA.
