8 Great Ideas TNA Gave Up On

5. World X Cup Tournament

In 2004, 2006 and 2008, TNA had their World X Cup tournament. No, the staggered years wasn’t done on purpose, though it would have been kind of cool had they established it as an every other year tournament.

The idea behind World X Cup was easy enough, four countries from across the globe, The United States, Mexico, Japan and Canada, each picked four members to represent their country. The teams then faced off in a variety of matches (gauntlet, ladder, Ultimate X) with the winning team getting a certain number of points. At the end of the tournament, the team with the most points wins and the wrestlers return to their country as heroes!

Having this as a yearly tournament (or every other year) in the same month of every year (like March Madness) would build up anticipation for its return. It would have established a history of winning teams and competitors, and created its own unique storylines. Over the years, new teams could be added like the UK, India, Australia, etc. It would have made wrestling fans from those countries more aware of Impact, and perhaps brought them in for the long term if they liked what they saw.

Until recently, WWE didn’t try appealing to the Chinese or Indian market, so TNA could have beat them to the punch by years and established some good will with their potentially huge fanbase by giving them World Cup teams. It would have only cost a little bit of money and some TV time, but they didn’t feel it was worth the effort.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
