8 Greatest Transitional WWE Champions Of All Time
5. Ric Flair
In 1992, it was once again time to move the title away from Hogan, at least in part because of the steroid scandal that was rocking the wrestling world. And because Vince McMahon decreed - long before the Invasion angle - that any transplant from another company couldn't really stack up against "his" guys, Ric Flair was never seriously considered as a long-term WWE Champion.
Which is ludicrous. In fact, Vince was so set against letting Ric really play ball that the NWA Heavyweight Championship he brought into the company was basically treated as a toy.
But hey, at least they let him win the Royal Rumble and procure the WWE Championship for a couple of months. But then it was time to move the belt back to Randy Savage, who'd just come out of retirement after lighting up the color commentary seat and becoming a major fan favorite in the process. Flair didn't even get his standard rematch against Savage at SummerSlam.
At the end of the year, it was decided that the leaner, less "enhanced" looking Bret Hart would become the face of the company. And while it's tough to argue that The Hitman didn't deserve the title, just imagine what a proper Ric Flair championship reign would have done for the company in '92.
We'll never know, as Flair was simply used once again to transition the belt from Savage to Hart - winning and losing the belt at house shows.
