3. Drew McIntyre Vs. Seth Rollins - WWE Heavyweight Championship Match

This was good, really good, but also distracting in its melodrama.

The capital A Acting was at least an attempt to adjust to the empty arena environment, one that wasn't clumsily spliced to pro wrestling, as was the case in the main event. Rollins telling McIntyre that he was a "brave man" before the near-fall at the finish was worse than Johnny Gargano's form - actually, let's not go nuts, nothing is worse than that, not even lockdown - but happily, it was so well done that it might have convinced, were it not for Byron Saxton informing me that a title change was imminent.

A really, really good blend of story and action, Rollins used his superior technical skill to grind down McIntyre in a way that never felt plodding nor tedious, and McIntyre roared back with invariably ace pacing and timing to get over as the resilient, intelligent babyface Champion. This was a banger that felt cursed by karma; the one time this company straps a babyface and they didn't sour the crowd on him with their bullsh*t, there is no crowd.

It wasn't groundbreaking, but Jesus it looked incredibly painful, particularly when Seth clipped his head on the announce table under Drew's overhead belly to belly suplex.

That was an awesome spot - they didn't telegraph it by removing the monitors, instead trusting the talent to execute it safely to its maximum potential - and it was emblematic of the match: brutal, characterful, and unexpected in its triumph.

Star Rating: ★★★¾
