8 Most Inspirational Underdog Stories In WWE History

7. Rey Mysterio, Bigger Star Than He Appears

Hey, speaking of little guys going on to do big things, let's reminisce for a minute about a Mexican-American wrestler who no one ever envisioned holding the WWE Championship belt. Rey Mysterio, lucha libre high-flyer extraordinaire, caught a series of lucky breaks that would ultimately lead to him being the face of the biggest wrestling promotion in the world. After beginning his career in Mexico, Mysterio bounced around from promotion to promotion, landing in ECW for a couple of years before developing a long stint with WCW. After a few years of that, he went back to Mexico, before ultimately ending up in the WWE. No matter where he went, though, he was always looked at as a cruiserweight. A little guy. And he was stuck doing little guy matches. Finally, after a few years as a mid-carder in WWE, he ended up at the grandest stage of them all: Wrestlemania, where he was set to face Randy Orton and Kurt Angle in a triple threat match for the WWE Championship. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmalWq894dk Now, when you have an underdog like this in a one-on-one match, there's always the chance of them pulling out the upset. Even at Wrestlemania. But when it's a three-way fight, with two top tier wrestlers and one who's been scraping his way up from the middle, you don't give that little guy much of a chance. But not only did he win, he did it with his cruiserweight style, forcing the brass in the back to realize that he wasn't just your average "little guy."
