Like bravely drinking through a comedown, this was a beautiful struggle.
Zack Sabre, Jr. and Tomohiro Ishii are a pair of believable and incredible professional wrestlers, and here, they wrestled a believable and incredible match - one that saw Sabre, Jr. go over but put over his opponent by resorting to a sunset flip powerbomb beyond his preferred technical repertoire.
Typical of Ishii's January fortunes, a month in which New Japan has pulled his trousers down again and again, the one time he receives a long, long-overdue marquee singles bout, he loses a belt. In contrast, this elevated Sabre, Jr's: having bested Tanahashi in last year's New Japan Cup, he comes equipped with a claim to his newly-won Heavyweight Title.
Given the foreigner deficit and his sublime talent, it surely won't be his only 2019 main event.
