8 Planned WWE WrestleMania 33 Matches That Fell Apart
3. Kenny Omega Vs. Anybody
The biggest wrestling story of January was the future of "The Cleaner" Kenny Omega. At Wrestle Kingdom 11, Omega and IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada had one of the best matches in the history of the sport, blowing anything WWE's done in years out of the water. About a day later, news broke that Omega's New Japan contract was coming to an end.
Immediately, speculation started. Like AJ Styles in 2016, could Omega jump to WWE in time for a major WrestleMania program? Triple H confirmed that the company had interest in Omega, and WWE.com began making references to him. Though a Royal Rumble debut was out of the question due to contractual obligations, WrestleMania was very much in the picture.
Omega did a great job of milking the fan interest over his next move, but ultimately, he decided to stay in New Japan for at least another year. Maybe Omega can perform at WrestleMania 34, but he wasn't interested in being on the card this year.
