8 Terrible Excuses Adults Use To Justify Watching Wrestling

6. Stone Cold Steve Austin Still Shows Up Sometimes

Man, I used this argument over and over again, just replacing 'Stone Cold Steve Austin' with 'The Rock', or 'Hulk Hogan', or 'The Undertaker'. Truth is, most people have encountered wrestling at some point in their lives, and a lot of people used to watch it when they were younger and don't anymore. That's fine, it literally shouldn't matter to a professional wrestling fan either way that some people 'grew out of it'. A huge amount of people from my generation watched wrestling because of the Attitude Era and the shenanigans of Austin and The Rock. That was the glory time when wrestling was officially 'cool'. Nowadays, most of the child fans from that time have stopped watching, and when they dismiss wrestling as adults, people are quick to point out 'oh, but The Rock comes back all the time' or 'Hulk Hogan still pops his head round the door' or 'Ric Flair occasionally appears.' Lionising the past just appears desperate, and worst of all, it's infected the actual product to a depressing degree. WWE Creative constantly bolsters lacklustre cards with appearances from part-timers and while fans shouldn't have a huge problem with that - after all, it is always fun to see Steve Austin - championing wrestling's past over wrestling's present only serves to confirm to anyone who gave up the WWE in the early/mid 2000s that they made the right choice.
