8 Things NXT Got Right At TakeOver: WarGames

3. The Rule Changes To WarGames

The main event of the show was (obviously) WarGames, although old-time fans expecting to see Dusty’s creation weren’t going to get it. The rules of the match were significantly changed, in order to put a modern twist on an old match. There was no roof, and one team were drawn to enter the match in full while the other two teams had just one man.

It is easy to see the complaints that fans may have, but there are good reasons for the changes. If the old traditional rules were followed and one man entered at a time, it may well have dragged miserably through the middle. The new rules allowed The Authors of Pain to come in and dramatically ramp up the energy, and the complexion of the match changed spectacularly.

The lack of roof was another point of contention for some fans, but it was clear to see why this was decided. The match was obviously going to involve a major spot from the top of the cage, and that spot came when Roderick Strong gave Adam Cole a huge superplex onto everyone.

The rule changes also meant that the match now has an NXT identity, as opposed to simply being an old Jim Crockett Promotions gimmick dredged up from the past. There will be more WarGames matches, you can bet on that.
