8 Things That Still Make No Sense About AEW

6. The Commentary Push-Back

AEW

To so many of us, Jim Ross is the hands-down greatest play-by-play commentator in the history of professional wrestling. JR has for so long been so fantastic in what he brings to the table.

The thing that doesn't make sense about AEW where it pertains to Jim Ross, however, is that so often his words go against what AEW is trying to serve up.

Each passing week on Dynamite, Ross will call attention to elements of the AEW product that don't make sense. And in his words, he's usually completely correct and merely commentating on what he sees.

If two performers spill out of the ring and spend a full minute brawling outside of the ring? JR will pull attention to the fact that these stars are only meant to have a ten-count before returning to the ring. Similarly, if a tag team spends, say, 30 seconds unloading double-team moves in front of the referee, Ross will again draw attention to this flagrant disregard of the rules - usually while Excalibur attempts to backtrack and cover up why these things are taking place.

Jim Ross isn't wrong whatsoever in what he says, yet these words serve to pinpoint some of the flaws and holes in the AEW product. Either AEW brass needs to take heed of Ross' words and use these comments as positive advice, or Jim needs to be asked to tone down making such observations live on air that risk undermining the product.

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010. In addition to his current WhatCulture role of Senior Content Producer, Andrew previously spent nearly a decade as Online Editor and Lead Writer for the world's longest-running genre publication, Starburst Magazine, and his work has also been featured on BBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, WhatToWatch, Sportkskeeda, and various other outlets, in addition to being a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic. Between his main dayjob, his role as the lead panel host of Wales Comic Con, and his gig as a pre-match host for Wrexham AFC games, Andrew has also carried out a hugely varied amount of interviews, from the likes of Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Adrienne Barbeau, Rob Zombie, Katharine Isabelle, Leigh Whannell, Bruce Campbell, and Tony Todd, to Kevin Smith, Ron Perlman, Elijah Wood, Giancarlo Esposito, Simon Pegg, Charlie Cox, the Russo Brothers, and Brian Blessed, to Kevin Conroy, Paul Dini, Tara Strong, Will Friedle, Burt Ward, Andrea Romano, Frank Miller, and Rob Liefeld, to Bret Hart, Sting, Mick Foley, Ricky Starks, Jamie Hayer, Britt Baker, Eric Bischoff, and William Regal, to Mickey Thomas, Joey Jones, Phil Parkinson, Brian Flynn, Denis Smith, Gary Bennett, Karl Connolly, and Bryan Robson - and that's just the tip of an ever-expanding iceberg.
