8 Things That Still Make No Sense About AEW

4. Cody's God Complex

MJF Confused
AEW

When Cody Rhodes took himself out of contention for the AEW Heavyweight Championship, it seemed to be done as a way for Cody to work lower down the card and bring some credibility to events away from the company's biggest prize.

That has indeed been the case for the most part, with Cody's work with the likes of MJF, Darby Allin, and Lance Archer having improved the stock of those talents in terms of mainstream perception, although there is an almost 'God complex' feeling that so often comes with the presentation of Cody.

Cody is a genuine star and one of the best talents that AEW has at its disposal, with him great on the mic, great in-ring, and with a great grasp of his character. But really, does Cody's weekly TNT Title defence have to end with an endorsement handshake and pyro?

Already, that act has started to get stale, with the pomp and circumstance afforded to the Cody character being something that would look ridiculous on a weekly basis even if Rhodes was the AEW Heavyweight Champ, let alone the secondary title holder who competes in matches that he ultimately should be winning.

I'm no massive fan of Triple H, but you'd have to think the wrestling community would lose its collective mind if Hunter was presented in this way. In fact, the wrestling community so often has lost its collective mind at Triple H pulling such similar stunts. But when it's Cody, it's okay.

Sometimes less is more, and you can get a guy over without them having to shake Cody's hand and get his endorsement each and every week. If Cody's shtick was being played out as a heel, fair enough, but this is clearly an issue until such a turn takes place.

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010. In addition to his current WhatCulture role of Senior Content Producer, Andrew previously spent nearly a decade as Online Editor and Lead Writer for the world's longest-running genre publication, Starburst Magazine, and his work has also been featured on BBC, TechRadar, Tom's Guide, WhatToWatch, Sportkskeeda, and various other outlets, in addition to being a Rotten Tomatoes-approved film critic. Between his main dayjob, his role as the lead panel host of Wales Comic Con, and his gig as a pre-match host for Wrexham AFC games, Andrew has also carried out a hugely varied amount of interviews, from the likes of Robert Englund, Kane Hodder, Adrienne Barbeau, Rob Zombie, Katharine Isabelle, Leigh Whannell, Bruce Campbell, and Tony Todd, to Kevin Smith, Ron Perlman, Elijah Wood, Giancarlo Esposito, Simon Pegg, Charlie Cox, the Russo Brothers, and Brian Blessed, to Kevin Conroy, Paul Dini, Tara Strong, Will Friedle, Burt Ward, Andrea Romano, Frank Miller, and Rob Liefeld, to Bret Hart, Sting, Mick Foley, Ricky Starks, Jamie Hayer, Britt Baker, Eric Bischoff, and William Regal, to Mickey Thomas, Joey Jones, Phil Parkinson, Brian Flynn, Denis Smith, Gary Bennett, Karl Connolly, and Bryan Robson - and that's just the tip of an ever-expanding iceberg.
