8 Things WWE Can Learn From Other Promotions

8. CHIKARA - Comedy Wrestling

Let's not beat around the bush - WWE doesn't have a great track record when it comes to comedy wrestling. The Fashion Files have been a rare comedic hit, but they are the exception that proves the rule. WWE comedy is historically very juvenile, with writers desperately lunging for the lowest hanging fruit in an attempt to make Vince McMahon laugh.

There is a place for comedy in pro graps, and this is one of the things that CHIKARA has always done extremely well. Mike Quackenbush's promotion certainly has its problems, but the balance of serious wrestling and comedy is not one of them.

Because of the relative lack of promo time in CHIKARA, the majority of the laughs come from what happens inside the ring. This brings out the creative side of the performers, as they work together to improvise spots designed to relieve tension and get a laugh out of the audience.

WWE humour comes off as overly rehearsed, a form of comedy that tries way too hard to be something that it isn't. Funny wrestling will always have a place in the sport, and WWE's product could be a whole lot more enjoyable if it improved in this area.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
