8 Things WWE's Tag Division Could Learn From NXT

8. Tournaments

Tournaments in wrestling are almost always great fun to watch. There's a reason that King of the Ring remains so popular amongst online fans, despite its rather variable star-making success rate. They give matches a purpose and drive that they wouldn't otherwise have and allow for intriguing combinations of performers to be pitted against each other, without the need for storyline gymnastics to bring them together. In NXT, this format has come to fruition recently with the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic €” a tournament for the tag division that stretched across weeks of NXT television before culminating at NXT TakeOver: Respect. By incorporating so many different stars, fresh teams were created and existing ones were allowed to reach new heights. Over the last year or so, there have been multiple tournaments in NXT to crown tag team number one contenders, as it's a gimmick that works every time. Too frequently, champions across the board on the main WWE roster move from challenger to challenger without any rhyme or reason. The Tag Team Titles are currently mere ornaments around the waists of New Day, but could soon become far more important if potential challengers have to fight for the right to challenge them. The belts are currently on the right people, but WWE needs to build credible competition. A tournament would certainly achieve that.
