8 Things You Didn't Know About Rey Mysterio

1. He Was Going To Lose His Mask In 1997

Whilst there may have been some logical justification for WCW's decision to remove Rey's mask in 1999, original plans to denude the Mexican's face at 1997's Halloween Havoc event were positively barmy. Thankfully, sensible heads prevailed, but not without ticking the little luchador off.

Mysterio was so vexed by Eric Bischoff's plan to strip him of his leather face that he flatly refused to turn up to the venue on the night of the show. His opponent, Eddie Guerrero, supported his close friend 100%, even pleading with the hierarchy to reverse the finish. It was to no avail, so 'Latino Heat' advised Rey to forget the stipulation, and instead go out there and have the best match imaginable. Reluctantly, the downtrodden Mexican agreed.

Minutes before the match, Bischoff had a private word in Rey's ear; the mask was staying on, and Eddie was losing the match. It's not known what caused Eric's sudden change of heart, or if it was his plan all along. Either way, a fired-up Rey proceeded to have one of the company's finest ever bouts anyway.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
