8 Times Wrestlers Who Wanted To Quit Were Given Championships

1. Scott Steiner (WCW Television Champion)

Scott Steiner proved his loyalties were literally relative during the end of his WCW run in 1992.

With brother Rick sidelined following a torn pectoral muscle, the younger of the pair was launched on an experimental singles run that would ultimately end with a heel turn. Despite being the superior of the siblings, and having the potential to become a star going solo, the storyline didn't sit right with Steiner. Murderising hapless jobbers was just no fun without his brother in tow, and he adamantly protested new booker Bill Watt's decision to split the pair up.

Around the same time, the Michigan alumni were locked in contract negotiations with the financially straitened company. Overtures had already been made from both New Japan and WCW's north east rivals, and the duo's departure seemed imminent.

That - and Steiner's uncooperative attitude when it came to jobs - didn't prevent Watts slapping the Television Title on his new singles hopeful. It was as idiotic a move as it sounds; when terms couldn't be ironed out, the brothers simply quit and headed to Stamford. The belt, already struggling to be taken seriously, was rapidly vacated and left dormant until the following March.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
