This week's Sting segment began like every weekly Sting segment begins, as Tony Schiavone invited the Icon to the ring for a nice chat. Then came a great visual. Before Sting could open his mouth, Team Taz appeared on the big screen, zipping Darby Allin's downed body into a body bag before dragging it around the parking lot with their car.
An incredible act of violence and the kind of escalation this feud needed ahead of Revolution. Tremendous stuff.
Until it wasn't.
Sting headed to the back. Minutes later, we found out that the former WCW star will respond to Team Taz not in a few minutes, not by the end of the show... but next week.
Next week! When his ally and protégé has just been treated like the wine-seller assassin in Game of Thrones. That's weak, and everything that's felt pedestrian about this feud so far.
Rather than using Sting in novel and interesting ways, it feels like AEW is booking him solely to pop a nice quarter-hour number. Understandable from a business standpoint this may be, but it doesn't make for exciting TV, and all we're guaranteed next week is another talking segment - just like the rest of them. Throw in the lack of urgency and immediate fire from the legend and we're left wondering when, exactly, this thing is going to hit the next gear.
