8 Ups & 3 Downs From AEW Dynamite: New Year's Smash (Jan 6)
2. Omega & Fenix Shoot Fireworks
This didn't come close to hitting Rey Fenix or Kenny Omega's ceiling. From their track records (together and apart), we know both are capable of hitting the MOTYC tier in the right spot - which this wasn't. This was a television main event with a four-week build.
Rather than going for a grander story, Fenix and Omega prioritised fireworks. This match was all about generating excitement through creative athletic spots, as the duo matched each other athletically and strategically, their spots progressively building in impressiveness.
Fenix flipping off the top rope to hit a move best described as a Sunset Flip German Suplex (?!) looked incredible. Later, he bounced straight up from a V-Trigger, clocked Omega with a kick, then collapsed in a heap, delaying his selling. A Cutter from the inside out had Kenny rocked but catching Rey's dive and dropping him with a modified Tiger Driver gave 'The Cleaner' the match's most impressive offensive burst.
More than anything else, this match was a playground for the wrestlers to perform cool, unique exchanges, some of which you may never have seen before, without sacrificing basic pro wrestling psychology. While not as substantial as their best work, it was pretty to look at - and pretty great on the whole.
