8 Ups & 3 Downs From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (Mar 20)
1. Visually Impaired
In just one click of a page, a review of a match will follow that will heap praise on two tried and tested performers working through the beats of a well-practiced and well-told story to a dramatic and deeply satisfying end. Charlotte Flair and Natalya are f*cking really good at that bit - but did an enormous weakness in their chemistry really need exposing beforehand?
The SmackDown Women's Champion was at least watching the television the normal way as an Asuka promo video concluded. And so she should have been too - this was a logical reason for 'The Queen' to be made z zombie by the backstage monitor. But do they have to? Do they have to? Do they have to? Do they have to let it linger?
Charlotte's reactions weren't emoting anything in particular (despite obvious efforts to do so), but were made worse by the woefully scripted and directed Natalya. Unconvincingly rabble-rousing ahead of Charlotte's defence against Asuka, the feline-frenzied Hart Dungeon graduate tried heaping exposition upon her foe, but delivered the lines with such little conviction that the message was entirely lost.
Rushed nonsense like this did nothing for the programme it was trying to heat up for WrestleMania, nor the match it was required to set up that very same night. Thank goodness the great wrestlers are great wrestlers...
