4. Baron Corbin (2017)
At this stage, any of the remaining entries could make a case for the top spot on this list.
Cast your mind back to 2017 when Baron Corbin was in his first tour of duty with WWE and the company viewed him as a huge future star. They entrusted him with the Money in the Bank briefcase that summer, which he held for two months while losing to Shinsuke Nakamura twice (because that’s how WWE booked its future world champions).
On an episode of SmackDown that August, John Cena was facing WWE Champion Jinder Mahal for the title when Corbin interfered, causing a disqualification. Baron then cashed in his MITB briefcase for easy pickings against Mahal. However, Corbin turned at the bell to slug Cena, who had struggled back to his feet on the apron. Jinder snuck up and rolled the Lone Wolf up for the three count, beating back a briefcase challenge in six seconds.
It was impossible to watch this and not think that WWE viewed Corbin as a mid-card goof at best, having him fall short to Jinder of all champions, and via a distraction rollup at that. Just a dismal, awful cash-in. They couldn’t even play up the idea of a valiant, exhausted hero overcoming the opportunistic heel with his last bit of energy, because Mahal himself was an opportunistic villain. Just a bad decision from every angle.
