8 Wrestling Angles Which Exploited Real Life Deaths
2. Punk And Heyman spread Bearer's Ashes
When one man is dressing up as a dead person and the other is spreading that dead person's ashes, you've probably jumped the shark.
William Moody - aka Paul Bearer - died of a heart attack in 2013, whilst his long-time client, The Undertaker, was embroiled in a WrestleMania feud with CM Punk. Because the Bearer character had been associated with the Deadman for nearly his entire career, it was a given that it might impact 'Taker and his arc.
WWE seemingly did all the right things in the beginning, putting on a memorial episode of Raw for Moody and letting The Undertaker pay tribute to his former manager. Then CM Punk interrupted.
He ran down Big Evil and poked fun at Paul Bearer's passing, giving a taste of what was to come in the following weeks. Punk would steal the urn made famous by Undertaker and Bearer, using it to attack him and his kayfabe brother, Kane.
The icing on the cake came when Punk's manager, Paul Heyman, came out on Raw dressed as Bearer, white face and all. While Punk beat down on The Undertaker with the urn, he poured Bearer's ashes out over him, laughing alongside a mocking Heyman.
WWE had asked Moody's sons if it was alright to use their father as a part of the build, to which they agreed, but they would come out later stating their anger at the way they were misled on exactly how their dad would be incorporated with the story line.
