8 WWE Commentators Vince McMahon Soured On

4. Josh Mathews

It's amazing that, for as long as Josh Mathews was with WWE (nearly a dozen years), he never once came close to clinching that sacred spot as the voice of WWE.

You have to believe Michael Cole and possibly others thought he would one day assume that role, but it just wasn't meant to be. Perhaps that was due to how he was simply an average announcer at best, and an obnoxious one at worst, and there was a reason why he was tucked away on ECW and Superstars for so many years.

Vince McMahon must have liked what he saw (er, heard) in 2010, however, when Mathews replaced Todd Grisham as SmackDown's play-by-play commentator. Unfortunately, he and Michael Cole were an absolutely atrocious pairing, especially considering Cole was a heel at the time and Mathews often spurred him on.

Throughout Cole's feud with Jerry Lawler in 2011, Mathews often worked as a color commentator on Raw - and even called a good chunk of WrestleMania 27. That was his chance to shine. and he fell flat. Unsurprisingly, he was booted from the booth not long after.

Matthews largely worked as a backstage interviewer until his release in June 2014.
