I'm pretty sure everyone remembers Rey Mysterio's first run with the World Heavyweight Championship less than fondly.

Rey's road to the title was emotional, coming off the back of the death of Eddie Guerrero through a record-breaking Royal Rumble performance and victory in a triple threat match at WrestleMania 22 (over Kurt Angle and Randy Orton). It should have been something monumental, but...

In truth, Rey was presented as being a lucky champion from start to finish. His main feud during this time was with John 'Bradshaw' Layfield, and this saw Rey Rey lose to a conveyor belt of giants throughout, taking clean losses against The Great Khali and Mark Henry. Not long after, Rey lost the title to King Booker.

Despite the emotional aspect of his win, Rey's title reign was an immensely depressing experience for fans. Rey had been hugely popular for a long, long time, and finally seeing him on top of the mountain was a beautiful thing. Seeing him squashed by Khali, not so much.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
