9 Planned WWE WrestleMania 32 Matches That Fell Apart

9. Steve Austin Versus Brock Lesnar

As soon as WrestleMania 32 was announced for Dallas, many fans assumed that Steve Austin would come out of retirement to wrestle one final match in his home state. While a bout with John Cena could be seen as an intergenerational passing of the torch in the way the Rock-Cena matches were, it made far more sense from a storyline and publicity standpoint for Austin to take on "The Beast Incarnate" Brock Lesnar. The two had never faced off in the past, and Brock Lesnar's status as WWE's chief bad-ass would have played into a huge-drawing Austin return perfectly. Sure enough, WWE was on it, trying to convince Austin to take the match and headline the show. Why it fell apart: Austin simply wasn't interested. Even though WWE probably would have written him a blank check, "Stone Cold" - who would be 51 years old at the time of the match - was reticent to step into the ring. Fans' hopes were briefly raised in June of 2015 when Paul Heyman appeared on Austin's podcast and the former WWE Champion all but challenged Lesnar to a match, but he later apologized, saying that he was simply getting lost in his character and had no intention of wrestling again. When Lesnar appeared on Austin's podcast in October and nothing was done to build a bout, it was clear that this one wasn't happening.
